13 The Chinese People's Liberation Army Forces Hong Kong Building
Completed in 1979, The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Forces Hong Kong Building was formerly the headquarters of the British Forces and was then known as the Prince of Wales Building. The Sino-British defence handover ceremony took place here at midnight on 30 June 1997, and The Chinese PLA Forces formally took over this building which has significant symbolic meaning at zero hour on 1 July 1997.
The building now houses The Chinese PLA Forces Hong Kong, a symbol of Chinese sovereignty and the guards of Hong Kong. They are defending this place and bringing us peace and tranquility. Officers and soldiers of The Chinese PLA Forces Hong Kong are not only well-trained in military skills, but have also established good ties with the people of Hong Kong. They organise "Barracks Open Day" annually to share the fun and joy with the public. They also take part actively in community services such as blood donation and tree planting.
The building has a wine-glass look. This glass is filled with the blessings of the members of The Chinese PLA Forces Hong Kong, who all wish Hong Kong prosperity and stability and an ever brighter future under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle.
