Over 100 years of its existence, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation has established four successive headquarters at its site at One Queen's Road Central.
Founded in Hong Kong in 1865, the Bank's first offices were in an existing building, facing Queen's Road on one side and the Praya, or waterfront, on the other. The three subsequent headquarters were purpose-built to meet the needs of the time and, as far as possible, to cater for anticipated changes in the future. Each set new standards of design and construction, and introduced new technology to Hong Kong, but none more so than the present building designed by Norman Foster and completed in 1985. The present HSBC Main Building at One Queen's Road is said to be one of the finest and most innovative bank buildings in the world.
